Background
'It was some 30 years ago that I left Southend College of Art, however due to various family commitments at the time I did not pursue a career in the arts but began work as an apprentice boatbuilder. I worked my way through various other jobs, latterly as a building surveyor. I continued painting in my spare time but some years later felt that my work was not developing and I stopped painting.
'It was when I moved to Cornwall in 1994 that I once again felt inspired to paint. In 2000 my wife and I bought the Millpool Gallery [ now Off the Wall Art ] and I began exhibiting my new work.
'My current work grew out of a fascination with the height of harbour walls viewed from a 'low tide' perspective, and with the buildings which are built on the piers and quays. The sense of height one feels when looking up at the walls from within the harbour gave me the same feeling as looking upwards at the immense space inside a cathedral. I have tried to capture this feeling of great height and by introducing other elements and memories from my past I hope to create a sense of timelessness, calm and intrigue.
"The work for Carnevale was made as a result of a visit to Venice in July in 2005. It was my first time in Venice and I was not disappointed. The romanticism of the colours and decay in the buildings - buildings which haven't changed over the centuries - was a perfect subject for my style of painting.'
